Roger S. Baskes, Extract of Narrative Personal Résumé




Roger Baskes was a 1959 graduate of Harvard Law School, and practiced law in Chicago for 20 years.

He is an avid collector of atlases and other books with maps, and many of his interests relate to books and maps.  Roger Baskes is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Newberry Library in Chicago.   In 1999 he and his wife endowed the provision of services to readers in what has been named the Roger and Julie Baskes Department of Special Collections at The Newberry Library.

In 2002 Roger was elected President of the London-based International Map Collectors' Society.  He was previously the national co-chairman of the steering committee of the Philip L Phillips Society, the support group of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress, and is a member of the Library of Congress's James Madison Council .  Roger is also a trustee of the American Trust for the British Library and a member of the Association Internationale de Bibliophilie, the Caxton Club of Chicago, and the Grolier Club of New York.  Roger was formerly the president of the Chicago Map Society, and is a member of several other American map societies.

Both natives of Chicago, Roger and Julie Baskes have three adult children, and they and their spouses each have two children, six grandchildren in all, spread over the eastern half of the United States. Roger and Julie are ardent fans of travel, of theatre and the opera, and of reading history and literature.
